SNOW much fun!

It was so nice getting back to school on Friday after our "snow break"!  It was so great seeing all the kiddos are hearing about the fun time they had in the snow.

Even though we were only in school for 1 day, we had a great day!

We went to see Alice in Wonderland at the high school in the morning. If you get a chance, you must go see the play.  The students do an amazing job.

After lunch, we read the story, A Snow Day.  We discussed things that we enjoy doing on snow days.  The kiddos came up with a lot of great responses......play in the snow, have a snowball fight, build a snowman, go sledding, ski, drink hot chocolate, watch movies, sit by the fire, play games with their mom where just a few of them.  Then, students wrote about their favorite thing to do on a snowy day in their journals.  We ended our fun day by making our own "snow".  The kiddos had a blast playing and making "snow" sculptures.  It is very simple to make using only 2 ingredients.

Here is the recipe if you would like to make it at home:

3 cups of baking soda
1/2 cup of hair conditioner.

Mix in a container and have fun!

What is Fluency?

I have noticed that the kiddos are really taking off as readers, but they are not reading fluently.  Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately and with expression. Fluency is important because it allows students to make meaning while they read and to enjoy reading. Fluency can be developed and improved through practice and by modeling fluent reading to your child. Repeated readings of passages and or books also help develop fluency.

Once your child has mastered their sight words and completed all the Lightening Word sheets, they are ready to move onto the fluency activities.  Each week your child will be engaged with a fluency poem, a fluency reading passage, and a fluency game or activity. Your child will need a timer to complete these activities. Encourage your child to revisit favorite activities. Repeated readings will foster fluency.
